I've started reading the book titled "The Alchemist". A novel by Paulo Coelho. I'm sure many of you would have heard of him and his books too. This particular book/publication is good cos it has questions for relfections at the back. So I thought I should make good use of this chance and read then reflect using the questions as a guideline. As I read the book till halfway now, I can really see why so many ppl applaud this great author. Indeed, he writes well, not too fictional and just enough to put in great insights, phrases of wisdom and his perspective. I must say that it's enough words to take ppl's mind away and to really respect this author. So, being one of those who heard just how great he is, I was tempted to really absorb every note-worthy sentence and everything that I read. But, I suddenly paused. I paused and put down the book to think for a moment: No. I shouldn't be doing this. Well, books are books. The words written are the author's perspective and thoughts. It is him, a flawed and imperfect person, just like me, who writes this book. So I shouldn't absorb EVERYTHING he says. It's true that there are some things written that are very meaningful, insightful and are good reminders to life. BUT, the important thing and the first thing I should do is to base it back on the Bible. To align what is said in the book to what I learn from the absolute truth--the Bible. What goes into my mind, comes out of my mouth and hands. So whatever I take in, I must be very careful in them lest they transform to words and actions that are in contrast with the Bible's values. And how true it is for every book that you and I read! To go through a scanner, a filter and to be careful. Ultimately, it is God's Word that we, Christians, turn to for values and principles in life. God holds the key to the truth in life and no other. So, I can be awed, I can reflect and think through the questions. But I must also be careful and mindful of what I absorb and learn from it--to be only what will be helpful and useful and pure. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
